The election of Mayor in 1817 is in the middle of the campaign to break the corrupt hold the VERECKER family had over the Limerick corporation. John TUTHILL the independent's candidate had for some time been running a campaign including legal actions and many advertisments in the local papers. His supporters included the Earl of Limerick and the extended PERY family.
The VERECKERS maintained their hold by manipulating the voter and freemen's lists. See North Munster Antiquarian Journal 4(3) 1945 pp103-30.
While the Hon J P VERECKER was declared duly elected the Limerick General Advertiser stated on 29 July 1817 "Let me now ask the most predudiced, if the Citizens of Limerick were permitted to exercise their Elective Franchise, and if the worthy sheriffs had appointed an assessor, as required by Mr TUTHILL, who would be the sitting Member for Limerick ?"
The VERECKER's hold was not broken until an Act of Parliament in 1822.
At the late Common Council, Lord Viscount Gort (VERECKER) was appointed Chamberlain — The following freemen were at the same time elected Burgesses of the Corporation, viz. George GOUGH, jun. Wm RYVES, Tontine Buildings; Mathew HEMMINGS, Major Samuel TOMKINS, John WALLACE, and Joseph SARGENT, Esqrs. The Freedom of the city was voted to Maj General O'MEARA and Major General O'LOUGHLIN, commanding this district.
