DEPOPULATION NEAR ATHLONE

(From a correspondent)

Athlone, 20th Feb., 1849

The work of the extermination goes on here with railroad velocity.  About on hundred of the most substantial of the farmers of this neighbourhood have, within the last few weeks, fled the homes of their fathers—the sheriff and his levellers fly from village to village, their track is marked by the hideous ruins of farm houses and cottages once the homes of happy and contented inmates.
