Ellen BARRETT one of my great grand mothers was born at Ballinduff, in Ardrahan parish, Co Galway, Ireland and came to Maryborough, Queensland, Australia arriving on 30 May 1878. She came out with one of her mother's family Anne LEONARD (who was born c1864 and married c1880 John O'DOHERTY).

One of my maternal side great great great grandfathers was Thomas Swan CROKER. I believe that his mother was the daughter of William SWAN of Kilrisk and Dublin by his second wife Jane LEE. William SWAN was the eldest son of Edward SWAN and Jane BELLINGHAM. Jane was a daughter of Sir Daniel BELLINGHAM Bt the first Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1666.

My mother's mother was Mary Ellen CROKER. Her grandfather, William Swan CROKER, was the first of my ancestors to arrive in Australia. He came to Sydney from Ireland on the Champion arriving 5 October 1840. He left a memorandum that gave details of some of his relatives and the names of his father and grandfather.

This memorandum started my genealogical research and I have been able to prove many of the claims made in it. My research on the CROKER families of Ireland has been wide ranging tracing many of the descendants of the original settlers in Ireland from 1600.

Jane LEE (see LEE and SWAN above) maried firstly to Walter CHAMBERLAIN by a Kilaloe marriage licence dated 1749. There is a later marriage on 22 November 1830 of Anne CROKER daughter of General Robert CROKER and Charles CHAMBERLAIN. This Robert CROKER is claimed to be a brother of Edward Abraham CROKER my great great great great grandfather.
