The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.
Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

WMT J | 1824 | 9 | 16 | NPS | AUCHMUTY | Samuel | Sir | CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL. SPLENDID NEW MONUMENT. This Cathedral, as well as St. Patrick's, is now undergoing thorough repair. The body of the Church is being painted, and some of the monuments in the great aisle have been cleaned up, particularly Prior's, Lord Chancellor Bowes, and Lord Lifford's. Close to the principal entrance we yesterday saw unmasked, for the first time, Mr. Kirk's truly classical and highly finished monument to the late Right Hon. Sir Samuel Auchmuty, G.C.B. the late Commander of his Majesty's Forces in Ireland. It is principally of white marble of the purest kind. The monument consists of an excavated pedestal, surmounted in background by a pyramid of white marble, relieved by a dove-coloured border. The bust of Sir Samuel (an exquisite likeness), is deposited in the square recess of the pedestal; the light being extremely good, the bust, which is the square stile of modern sculpture, is seen to particular advantage, and is admirably relieved by effective light and shade. Over the bust, and in front of the pyramid, stands a figure of Victory, expressed in the most tasteful manner, and chisseled out with admirable brilliancy. The figure is an Alto Relievo, having at the back a simply cut Grecian Tablet, adorned with the lotus at the edges of the frama. It is impossible to view this noble figure, which stands four feet high, without admiration; the position is expressive of grief, the countenance indicating that passion most forcibly and pathetically, the left hand convulsively presses to the heart, a scroll, bearing the name of the illustrious warrior. The right hand lets fall, from its relaxed nerves, the torch of victory, and admirably conveys the historical account of Sir Samuel's death; Victory seems to mourn that he died not "in the battle's front", but fell as a Civilian (our readers will call to memory that he fell from his horse in a fit of apoplexy, on the 10th of August, 1822). The following inscription is traced on the tomb:- SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE Right Hon. Sir SAMUEL ACHMUTY, G.C.B. Colonel of his Majesty's 78th Regiment of Foot, Who died the 11th day of August, 1822, AETAT. 64, Whilst Commanding his Majesty's Forces in Ireland. He was a brave, experienced, and successful Officer, and victorious whenever he had the Command. He twice received the thanks of Parliament for his services. The capture of MONTE VIDEO, in South America, And of the Island of JAVA, in the East Indies, Added both to his fame and his fortune. This Monument was erected by his relatives, as a tribute to his private as well as public worth. (T. KIRK, R.H.A., Fecit.) We cannot close this article without offering our humble tribute of admiration to the Irishman who, bursting through the unpropitious clouds which obscure and discourage NATIVE TALENT, in an art which, in Ireland, may be called unpatronized, has erected a momento to his own fame in this venerable Cathedral, while recording the chivalry of a distinguished British Soldier. | SdeM |

Last Tuesday evening Mr. Abel HARRIS, eldest of ten children of Mr. Michael HARRIS, anvunfortunate gentleman confined some years for debt in South Gaol, coming out of a ship he belonged to, on the South Mall, fell into the river, where he remained for some time till by the exertions of some other sailors he was taken up, without any appearance of life, but through the very great attention of Doctors HARRIS, and BAGNELL, and the humanity of Mr. HENNESSY, who received him into his lime and salt works, he was after much difficulty brought to life, though not yet out of danger. This misfortune is an increase to the woes afflicting his unfortunate family, he being a very promising young man,in whom his ill-fated parents hoped to find as assistant to mitigate their sorrows. | NickR | |
