Nick Reddan's Newspaper Extracts
(now including Simon de Montfort's extracts (work in progress))
— part 64

The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.

List of newspapers and where they might be found

Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

LGA1812403NPSM'MAHON Mr SerjeantCork April 2:...
In the city civil court the case of SULLIVAN against TUCKEY for a breach of promise of marriage, occupied the court from four o'clock to nine at night of Friday. It appeared the plaintiff was a servant in the house of the father of defendant, receiving wages of two guineas a year—the young gentleman had just returned from college, and having become deeply enamoured with his fair desdemona, wrote some very loving letters, which did much more credit to the galantry of his heart than the sagacity of his head— it appeared that the birth of a lovely babe was the consequence of the attachment— in consequence of the interference of his friends, the young gentleman was induced to give up all hopes of enjoying Miss SULLIVAN as his bride— but she was determined not to be treated so cavalierly with impunity, and therefore brought her action. Mr Serjeant M'MAHON, in a very able speech maintained the maid was the seducer and the young man seduced but the jury, it seems, thought otherewise, for they returned a verdict of 100 guineas against the defendant

WMT J1826615NPDMOFFETTJamesRevHORRIBLE MURDER IN THE COUNTY OF LONGFORD. We have just heard that a most dreadful murder was committed last Sunday night, on the road between Ballymahon, and the town of Longford. It appears, that a young man named Thomas Needham, son to the Clerk of the Parish of Moydow, being on his way home, fell in company with some persons who were drinking in an unlicensed whiskey house, no quarrel whatever seems to have occured there, but soon after leaving that place, the unfortunate Needham was murdered in the most barbarous manner - his skull was beaten all to 10 pieces with stones, his eyes knocked into the head, and his face altogether so contused, as to render it quite frightful to behold. The body was dragged through hedges and ditches nearly half a mile, and then deposited in a boghole, where it was found next day nearly naked. Needham was robbed of clothes and money, as well as deprived of life. There being no Coroner in the County, the neighbouring Magistrates, viz: Sir George Fetherston, Major O'Donoghue, Mr. Kingston of Mosstown, and the Rev. James Moffett, have been during the last two days holding an Inquest, which was not concluded when our Correspondent closed his letter. Through the extreme activity of the Constabulary, the whole of the persons implicated in this atrocious affair, have been taken into custody, and there is little doubt, we are happy to say, but that the guilty will be shortly brought to condign punishment. Rather a singular circumstance is concerned with this murderous transaction - exactly three years from the evening on which Needham met his shocking fate, he, while engaged with some youthful companions, threw a small stone at one of them, which missing the object aimed at, struck on the head of a woman who happened to be passing, a fracture was the consequence, and death in some time ensued, although the misfortune was purely accidental, vengeance was denounced by the relatives of the deceased - Catholic blood was spilt by the hand of an Heretic, and accident was considered as no sufficient excuse - The Parish Clerk's sons were afterwards assaulted wherever they appeared - some, to avoid persecution, found it necessary to enlist as soldiers, while the ill-fated subject of the present article, had to seek for service in distant places, from whence he was returning to visit his family, when cruelly butchered by his relentless foes.SdeM

WMT J1826309NPSMONCRIEFFCharles OUTRAGES. On Thursday last the 2d instant, being market day of Ballymahon, county of Longford, the resident Magistrates and Police having gone to attend the Longford Assizes which that day commenced, the Rockites took advantage of their absence, and committed numerous depredations, by way-laying and maltreating all those who they considered inimical to their diabolical system; one unfortunate man they murdered, named Thomas Lennon, Curracreehan, who was returning from the Market about 7 o'clock in the evening, and was pursued by a party of those villains to a place called Branagan, when they knocked him down, and inflicted such dreadful chastisement, that on his head alone, were six desperate wounds, he lingered until Sunday morning in excruciating agony when he died. An inquest was held on the deceased, by three Magistrates, in the Court-house of Ballymahon, but from the demoralised state of the public mind, and the sad system of terror that prevails to such an alarming extent, very little information was acquired on the investigation. Charles Moncrieff, of Pallas, was also attacked in like manner, on his return from the market same evening, and beaten with clubs and stones, and left to all appearance, in a lifeless state on the road ...SdeM

WMT J18301028NPSMONTFORT CaptKILLASHEE PETTY SESSIONS. On Monday last an investigation took place before Captains Montfort and Skipton, relative to certain rockite proceedings in Killashee ... We are quite persuaded that the Killashee district is a very ill chosen quarter for rockite exhibitions, the Magistrates resident in it being determined to put a stop "ir et armis" to such illegal proceedings - it is a pity these Magistrates are out of favor with "the priest of the parish" otherwise they undoubtedly would request his co-operation in admonishing his flock and beseeching him him to encrease among them a love of order and obedience to the laws.SdeM
Longford Msgr1837217NPSMONTFORT MrSPORTING On Wednesday there was a large muster of sportsmen at Colamber, where the Longford hounds met by appointment, but previous to their throwing off, three steeple-chase matches were to be decided. The course was laid out over the beautiful grass farm of P. O'Reilly, Esq., who had in the kindest manner given leave for that purpose. The whole course could be distinctly seen from the winning-post, and the day being very fine, and a number of equipages on the course, gave a brilliancy and gaiety to the scene which we have seldom seen equalled in the county of Longford. Soon after one o'clock the first match came off between Mr. Montfort's ch. m., ridden by the owner, and Mr. Blackall's blk. h. Cleek, ridden by Captain Campbell, which was won easily by the latter ...SdeM
Longford Msgr1837331NPSMONTFORT MrSTATE OF THIS COUNTY On Tuesday night last, as a respectable farmer named Patrick Owens, of Mount-Davis, was ploughing on the lands of Newtown-moore, he forgot that he had left his coat after him, and on returning rather late in the evening to obtain it, was assaulted by Michael Casey, his son Thomas Casey, Dominick Martin, and Thomas Casey, who attempted to swear him never to come on the lands which he held under Mr. Montfort. Thomas Casey had a gun and told him he would blow his brains out should he persist in keeping possession. Owens, much to his credit, notwithstanding their threats, refused taking any oath, but said he would give up the ground if the fine which he gave the landlord on getting possession was refunded. Nothing more occurred till Thursday night, when some persons who have not been yet identified, went to a house belonging to Owens, and to carry their intentions into effect burned it to the ground. Owens or his family, fortunately for themselves were not in the house at the time, by which they escaped the evil designs of their enemies. The Caseys and Dominick Martin, the principle in the transaction, are apprehended and lodged in jail for attempting to administer unlawful oaths; the former, has been let out on bail. It appeared that Michael Casey had the ground from Mr. Montfort sometime previous without paying any fine, but gave it up in consequence of not being allowed to take away a quantity of manure, belonging to a poor woman. Patrick Owens got possession shortly afterwards, by paying a fine to the Landlord, Mr. Montfort, which is the only cause assigned for such an outrage.SdeM
