Nick Reddan's Newspaper Extracts
(now including Simon de Montfort's extracts (work in progress))
— part 13

The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.

List of newspapers and where they might be found

Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

On the 15th ult., in the same barony, an armed party broke the house and carried away a gun and blunderbuss the property of Robert Cody. On the 16th, in the same barony, between six and seven o'clock, an armed party attacked the house of James Canning, of Lissagernal and took away a gun and pistol. On Sunday, the 20th ult., as Captain Atkinson, of Forgany, and his family were at Church, a fellow entered his house and demanded from the maidservant her master's arms - she shewed him into a room, and shutting the door, ran out and gave the alarm; the fellow instantly escaped without effecting his object. On the night of the 21st an armed party of from 40 to 50 attacked the house of John Wright, of Cartronbola, and dragging him out, swore him to give half his ground to his son-in-law. Longford J1839119NPSCARBRY MrATTEMPTED MURDER. On Monday last about twelve o'clock a most daring attempt was made to murder Mr. Thomas Mills of Clonahard, and his brother Mr. Charles Mills, of Lacken, than whom there does not exist more quiet or inoffensive men or respectable farmers in the county. On the above day the two Mills's went over towards Mahon's Yard, about seven miles from this town, on the Strokestown road, in the county of Roscommon, for the purpose of looking at a farm of land, the property of the Miss Newcomen's, and on which there are some small tenants who owe large arrears of rent, and who have not only refused to pay, although in some instances owing two or three years' rent, but have actually threatened the life of any person who may take it; the Mills's were informed that the herd would meet them between nine and ten o'clock, at Tarmonbarry to show them the land, however, he did not arrive for an hour after the appointed time, they then proceeded in company to view the land, and on their return were met on the road, about half a mile from Mahon's Yard, by 12 or 14 men, who fired a volley of large stones at them, one of which hit Thomas on the nose, broke it, it is thought, and stunned him so that he fell back, the horse on which was riding from the blows he received took fright and ran near half a mile, and he lying in an almost senseless state on his back. Charles, who had been riding along with him was knocked off his horse from a blow he received on the back of his head, when they commenced beating him with stones till they left him for dead, by which time his brother's horse became manageable and he returned to the spot. Mr. Carbry came up at the time, and brought Mr. Charles Mills into Longford in his gig, he being unable to ride. He since lies at the Rev. Mr. Kennedy's, and we are happy to state, that from enquiries made this morning, he is much better, and likely to recover. Thomas is also much recovered from the effects of the blows he received. The herd has been arrested, but nothing has been elicited from him although he underwent a strict examination before JOHN BARNES, Esq. Stipendiary Magistrate stationed here.SdeM

WMT J1830624NPDCARROLLParkerCol SirOn the 6th April, in the island of Corfu, Lieut. T.E. Thompson, 18th Regiment, eldest son of the late Rev. Thomas Thompson, Dean of Killala. His remains were borne to the grave by his sorrowing brother Officers, amongst whom he had served for 17 years, and followed by Colonel Sir Parker Carroll, as chief mourner, and all the Officers of that Garrison. We cannot pay a higher tribute to his memory than by quoting the words of the gallant Colonel - "We have to deplore the loss of as worthy a friend, and as valuable an Officer as could possibly exist."SdeM
