The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.
Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

WMT J | 1826 | 6 | 15 | NPS | NEEDHAM | Thomas | HORRIBLE MURDER IN THE COUNTY OF LONGFORD. We have just heard that a most dreadful murder was committed last Sunday night, on the road between Ballymahon, and the town of Longford. It appears, that a young man named Thomas Needham, son to the Clerk of the Parish of Moydow, being on his way home, fell in company with some persons who were drinking in an unlicensed whiskey house, no quarrel whatever seems to have occured there, but soon after leaving that place, the unfortunate Needham was murdered in the most barbarous manner - his skull was beaten all to 10 pieces with stones, his eyes knocked into the head, and his face altogether so contused, as to render it quite frightful to behold. The body was dragged through hedges and ditches nearly half a mile, and then deposited in a boghole, where it was found next day nearly naked. Needham was robbed of clothes and money, as well as deprived of life. There being no Coroner in the County, the neighbouring Magistrates, viz: Sir George Fetherston, Major O'Donoghue, Mr. Kingston of Mosstown, and the Rev. James Moffett, have been during the last two days holding an Inquest, which was not concluded when our Correspondent closed his letter. Through the extreme activity of the Constabulary, the whole of the persons implicated in this atrocious affair, have been taken into custody, and there is little doubt, we are happy to say, but that the guilty will be shortly brought to condign punishment. Rather a singular circumstance is concerned with this murderous transaction - exactly three years from the evening on which Needham met his shocking fate, he, while engaged with some youthful companions, threw a small stone at one of them, which missing the object aimed at, struck on the head of a woman who happened to be passing, a fracture was the consequence, and death in some time ensued, although the misfortune was purely accidental, vengeance was denounced by the relatives of the deceased - Catholic blood was spilt by the hand of an Heretic, and accident was considered as no sufficient excuse - The Parish Clerk's sons were afterwards assaulted wherever they appeared - some, to avoid persecution, found it necessary to enlist as soldiers, while the ill-fated subject of the present article, had to seek for service in distant places, from whence he was returning to visit his family, when cruelly butchered by his relentless foes. | SdeM

Bohannan had been advertised in "The Hue and Cry" for a considerable time. Too much praise cannot be given to Mr. Hogg for the zeal and activity displayed by him on the occasion. Bohannan has been committed to Longford gaol for trial at the ensuing Assizes. | SdeM

WMT J | 1827 | 3 | 15 | NPS | NEEDHAM | LONGFORD ASSIZES. ... A case of horrible murder committed in the month of June last, on a man named Needham, a Protestant, excited intense interest. Two men named Buchannan (commonly called Bockanan) and Dinnigan were tried on Thursday last for this offence, which was characterized by peculiar traits of atrocity. After a patient investigation of several hours, and a most luminous charge from the Judge, both the prisoners were found guilty, and received sentence of death. The conduct of Buchannan on the occasion, evinced the most daring spirit. When that part of the sentence which directed that their bodies should be delivered to the Surgeons for dissection, was pronounced, this hardened criminal exclaimed that he (the Judge) "could do no worse"; and he thanked God, that "although it was in his power to order punishment for the body, he could not molest his soul". The same unbending spirit marked his conduct to the last. On Saturday about one o'clock, the two wretched criminals were brought forward for execution; Dinnigan appeared both nearly lifeless and insensible, but his comrade stepped upon the platform with the utmost firmness, and immediately with a loud voice, called to the immense surrounding multitude, "to kneel down and pray for him, for THAT HE WAS GOING TO DIE FOR HIS COUNTRY AND HIS RELIGION". The attendant clergyman very properly stopped this harangue, and the culprit, after some time spent in prayer, seemed more sensible of his awful situation. With a firm tone, he again called aloud to the people to pray for him, and entreated them to pursue the advice of their Parents and of their priests', and to avoid bad company and night walking, to which he owed his untimely end.* The drop fell, and the struggle of life was soon over. It is satisfactory to add, that Buchannan in private, acknowledged his guilt, and the justice of his sentence. After this admission, Buchannan exclaimed that he died for his religion and his country - ergo, Murdering a Protestant is to die for religion !!! | SdeM

He was a spectator on this occasion from a short distance, when four or five of the contending party approached and struck him with hurlies on the headhe fell and was trampled on, while blows were repeated with pitchforks, until death put an end to his sufferings. The only possible pretence that can be assigned for this murder is, that he was unfortunately connected with a party against whom his assailants cherished a hostile feeling or grudge from some old encounter. | NickR

WMT J | 1825 | 2 | 17 | NPS | NEWCOMEN | Miss | We are given to understand that in consequence of the decease of the late Viscount Newcomen and the closing of the concerns of the Banking House, of which his Lordship was the head, his large and valuable estates in different Counties of Ireland, namely Longford, Meath, Tipperary, and Dublin, will be shortly brought into the market. The following anecdote of the mother of the late Lord Newcomen appears in a London paper:- The father of Miss Newcomen, afterwards Viscountess Newcomen, died when she was quite a girl, leaving Mr. Webster, an old gentleman, an inhabitant of the town of Longford, her guardian, within three miles of which, one of her family seats, Carrickglass, is situate. It happened that there was an humble rustic party, principally of her own tenantry, which Miss Newcomen condescended to grace, and a dance being the principal amusement of the night, she partook of it, and had for her partner a Mr. Johnstone, a good-looking young man, the son of an opulent farmer. In some short time after this event, in the open day, Mr. Johnstone presented himself on horseback, with a pillion behind him, in the public street, on market day, when filled with people, and as Miss Newcomen was crossing the street from the house of her guardian, a friend of Johnstone, stationed near him, seized her round the waist, and attempted to place her on the pillion behind him. The young lady screamed, and fainted away; the horse was spirited, and became restless, which assisted her against the lawless effort. Mr. Webster, the guardian, who was an eye witness of the scene, ran out to rescue her, and as he approached, Mr. Johnstone's friend, who was armed with a sword, made a thrust at him, and the old gentleman fell to the ground. Mr. Webster, jun. the son, was also on the spot; he seized a blunderbuss, and conceiving that his father was killed, lodged the contents in the body of Mr. Johnstone's friend, who expired on the spot. The old man, however, escaped unhurt. Fortunately he had a coat studded with concave brass buttons, the fashion of the day, each as large as a crown piece, and full as strong, one of which received in its centre the otherwise fatal thrust of the unfortunate friend of Mr. Johnstone. Of the fate of the principal, Mr. Johnstone, we cannot speak with certainty, we believe he suffered death for the offence. The melancholy catastrophe permanently depressed the spirits of the lady. In some time after she married Sir W. Gleadowe, then a banker in Dublin, who, with her estates, assumed her name of Newcomen, since ennobled; but which title and estates by the late disastrous events, the death of her only son, and the failure of his bank, are now no more in the family. | SdeM
Longford J | 1839 | 1 | 19 | NPS | NEWCOMEN | Miss | ATTEMPTED MURDER. On Monday last about twelve o'clock a most daring attempt was made to murder Mr. Thomas Mills of Clonahard, and his brother Mr. Charles Mills, of Lacken, than whom there does not exist more quiet or inoffensive men or respectable farmers in the county. On the above day the two Mills's went over towards Mahon's Yard, about seven miles from this town, on the Strokestown road, in the county of Roscommon, for the purpose of looking at a farm of land, the property of the Miss Newcomen's, and on which there are some small tenants who owe large arrears of rent, and who have not only refused to pay, although in some instances owing two or three years' rent, but have actually threatened the life of any person who may take it; the Mills's were informed that the herd would meet them between nine and ten o'clock, at Tarmonbarry to show them the land, however, he did not arrive for an hour after the appointed time, they then proceeded in company to view the land, and on their return were met on the road, about half a mile from Mahon's Yard, by 12 or 14 men, who fired a volley of large stones at them, one of which hit Thomas on the nose, broke it, it is thought, and stunned him so that he fell back, the horse on which was riding from the blows he received took fright and ran near half a mile, and he lying in an almost senseless state on his back. Charles, who had been riding along with him was knocked off his horse from a blow he received on the back of his head, when they commenced beating him with stones till they left him for dead, by which time his brother's horse became manageable and he returned to the spot. Mr. Carbry came up at the time, and brought Mr. Charles Mills into Longford in his gig, he being unable to ride. He since lies at the Rev. Mr. Kennedy's, and we are happy to state, that from enquiries made this morning, he is much better, and likely to recover. Thomas is also much recovered from the effects of the blows he received. The herd has been arrested, but nothing has been elicited from him although he underwent a strict examination before JOHN BARNES, Esq. Stipendiary Magistrate stationed here. | SdeM

L.J. Nolan, Curate of that parish. Convinced by the reading of God's Holy Word, "which he had possessed himself of and perused for the purpose of supplying himself with Scripture arguments in favour of the Church of Rome, of which he was Priest", that the tenets of that Church were anti-scriptural, and her practices superstitious and idolatrous, he surrendered the parish of Fore, to which he had been appointed coadjutor Priest; and after spending some time in the College of Carlow, where he hoped his scruples would be overcome, and where he knew the strongest arguments in favour of Romanism would be brought forward - for he was unwilling to quit her communion if he could remain in it with safety to his soul and being only more firmly convinced that Popery was idolatry, he found himself called upon to forsake mother, and sisters, and friends, and earthly income, and all for Christ, and came to the Rev. Robert Noble, at Athboy, who had been remotely instrumental in his being brought to the knowledge of the truth. After spending two years in studying the doctrines of the United Church of England and Ireland, and having been examined and approved of by three beneficed Clergymen of the diocese, he was admitted by the Lord Bishop of Meath, as Curate of Athboy; but from over-exertion in preaching to the great crowds that attended on his ministry, he burst a blood vessel on his lungs about two years ago, which brought on rapid consumption, and terminated in his lamented death. He died in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ, resting solely on the merits of his dear Redeemer, and believing that he was able and willing to save him to the uttermost, inasmuch as he had come unto God by him. | SdeM |
