Nick Reddan's Newspaper Extracts
(now including Simon de Montfort's extracts (work in progress))
— part 92

The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.

List of newspapers and where they might be found

Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

FJ1769902-05ddNPSWALLACE MrBetween eleven and twelve at night, as Mr WALLACE of Essex-street, peruke -maker, was passing through Pill-lane, he was accosted opposite the fishmarket-gate by a lusty fellow, who asked him for charity, when he gave a penny, upon which the villain immediately collared him, drew out a long knife, and with the most dreadful imprecations demanded his money; but Mr WALLACE tripped up his heels, and got the knife from him, when two of his associates coming to his assistance, WALLACE pulled out his curling irons, and assured them if they came nearer he would blow their brains out, which irons the rogues imagining to be a pistol, took to their heels, and made off. He then conducted the first villain to St Mary's watch-house, but as the attempt was made in St Michans parish, he was obliged to take him to the watch-house on Inns-quay, where he gave him in charge to the constable of the night, and while the wig-maker was writing his name and where he lived. in order to be found to prosecute, the villain was suffered to escape.NickR

Child Murder
Ann ROCHE, an old woman, of very advanced age, was indicted for the murder of Michael LEAHY, a young child by drowning him in the Fleak. This case, which at ... assumed a very serious aspect, from the meaning imported to words spoken by the prisoner, "that the sin of the child's death was on the grand-mother, and not on the prisoner, and not on the prisoner," turned out to be a homicide committed under the delusion of the grossest superstition. The child, the four year old, could neither stand, walk, or speak—was thought to be Fairy struck—and the grand-mother ordered the prisoner and one of the witnesses, Mary CLIFFORD, to bathe the child every morning, in that pool of the river Fleak, where the boundaries of three farms met; they had so bathed it for three mornings, and on the last morning the prisoner kept the child longer under the water than usual, when her companion (the witness, Mary CLIFFORD) said to the prisoner, "how can you hope to see God after this," to which the prisoner replied "that the sin was on the grand-mother and not on her." Upon cross examination, the witness said it was not done with the intent to kill the child, but to cure it—to get the Fairy out of it
The Policeman, who apprehended her, on charging her with drowning the child, she said it was no matter as it had died four years ago.
Baron PENNEFATHER said, though it was a case of suspicion, and required to be thoroughly examined into, yet the Jury would not be safe in convicting the prisoner of murder, however strong the suspicion might be.
  Verdict—Not Guilty
In this case, Counsel for the Crown prosecuted.
The prisoner was defended by Messrs. O'CONNELL and H. WALSHE.

FJ1801611fNPSWARDPatrick Patrick WARD was tried on a charge of using seditious and traitorous words, such as "a groan for the birth-night, and a clap for Bonaparte, and the memory of Lord Edward FITZGERALD, &c" in the upper gallery of the Theatre Royal, Crow Street, on the evening of his Majesty's birth-day. Two peace-officers appeared to substantiate the above charge, and one of them actually swore that he heard the prisoner say, "a groan for the birth-night;" but he did not positively swear that the prisoner used the other words imputed to him, though he plainly heard them spoken from the spot he immediately sat at, and that he did not perceive any other person speaking in a similar manner at the moment. The pique sergeant who was on guard at the Theatre on that night, positively swore that he sat immediately on the next seat above the prisoner, that he did not hear him utter any such words, and that if he had so heard him, he certainly would conceive it his duty to take him into custody, Mr M'NALLY, counsel for the prisoner, addressed the Court, and said, that he could at the moment prove his client's loyalty, by the testimony of a very respectable person who attended for that purpose, but the Court considered that going into such evidence was unnecessary. The prisoner was forthwith acquitted and liberated.NickR

WMT J18241223NPDWEBSTERThomasEsqAt the advanced age of ninety, Thomas Webster, Esq. of Longford, much and deservedly regretted. The deceased has been many years Seneschal of Longford. We understand that he will be succeeded in that office by W.A. Williamson, Esq., a gentleman who, from his respectability and intelligence, is perfectly qualified for a trust which in that populous and thriving town is by no means unimportant.SdeM

WMT J1825217NPSWEBSTER MrWe are given to understand that in consequence of the decease of the late Viscount Newcomen and the closing of the concerns of the Banking House, of which his Lordship was the head, his large and valuable estates in different Counties of Ireland, namely Longford, Meath, Tipperary, and Dublin, will be shortly brought into the market.

The following anecdote of the mother of the late Lord Newcomen appears in a London paper:- The father of Miss Newcomen, afterwards Viscountess Newcomen, died when she was quite a girl, leaving Mr. Webster, an old gentleman, an inhabitant of the town of Longford, her guardian, within three miles of which, one of her family seats, Carrickglass, is situate. It happened that there was an humble rustic party, principally of her own tenantry, which Miss Newcomen condescended to grace, and a dance being the principal amusement of the night, she partook of it, and had for her partner a Mr. Johnstone, a good-looking young man, the son of an opulent farmer. In some short time after this event, in the open day, Mr. Johnstone presented himself on horseback, with a pillion behind him, in the public street, on market day, when filled with people, and as Miss Newcomen was crossing the street from the house of her guardian, a friend of Johnstone, stationed near him, seized her round the waist, and attempted to place her on the pillion behind him. The young lady screamed, and fainted away; the horse was spirited, and became restless, which assisted her against the lawless effort. Mr. Webster, the guardian, who was an eye witness of the scene, ran out to rescue her, and as he approached, Mr. Johnstone's friend, who was armed with a sword, made a thrust at him, and the old gentleman fell to the ground. Mr. Webster, jun. the son, was also on the spot; he seized a blunderbuss, and conceiving that his father was killed, lodged the contents in the body of Mr. Johnstone's friend, who expired on the spot. The old man, however, escaped unhurt. Fortunately he had a coat studded with concave brass buttons, the fashion of the day, each as large as a crown piece, and full as strong, one of which received in its centre the otherwise fatal thrust of the unfortunate friend of Mr. Johnstone. Of the fate of the principal, Mr. Johnstone, we cannot speak with certainty, we believe he suffered death for the offence. The melancholy catastrophe permanently depressed the spirits of the lady. In some time after she married Sir W. Gleadowe, then a banker in Dublin, who, with her estates, assumed her name of Newcomen, since ennobled; but which title and estates by the late disastrous events, the death of her only son, and the failure of his bank, are now no more in the family.
