The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.
Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.
TYPE has the following values NPB = birth, NPM = marriage, NPD = death, NPA = advertisement, NPN = notice, NPS = news story

WMT J | 1827 | 3 | 22 | NPM | MAGRATH | Peter | ASSIZES. Friday, March 16, 1827 ... Second Day - Saturday Richard Doolan, charged with forcibly entering the dwelling house house of Daniel Fox, at Sion Hill, Esq., and taking therefrom a gun, the property of said Daniel Fox. Prudence Fox deposed, that she was in the month of September last, in her father's house at Sion Hill; about six or seven o'clock at night, a man came to the door, and asked to have his pipe lighted; she took his pipe from him, and went to the kitchen fire to light it, and while doing so, she heard her brother cry out that the man had ran off with the gun which was on a rack in the hall; saw the gun lying on the rack five minutes before the man came to the door; would not know the man again; does not know whether he was frunk or not. Daniel Fox deposed, that he lived at Sion Hill in the month of September last, and had a gun lying on a rack in his hall at that time; between six and seven o'clock at night, he heard a rap at his kitchen door, his daughter opened it, and told him that a man wanted to have his pipe lighted, a short time afterwards, witness's son called out "the man has ran off with the gun;" witness and his son immediately pursued him and after running about a mile took him, before which the man threw down the gun. As they were pursuing him another boy came up to their assistance, who along with his son was a few yards nearer the man than he was; saw the man turn round and present a pistol at his son and servant boy while pursuing him; and afterwards saw the charge taken out of the pistol by the police; it was in a bog where the man was taken and when witness came up, the man was lying on the ground as if fainting, but witness thought it was all pretence; when the prisoner presented the pistol at his son during the pursuit he had the gun also under his left arm, identifies the prisoner at the bar as being the man whom he, his son and his servant boy pursued and took prisoner; had never seen the man before in his life. George Fox deposed that he is son of the last witness, and was in his father's house at Sion Hill, on the night that the gun was taken therefrom; was looking out of the kitchen door, and observed it under the man's arm, after he had gone a little distance from the house; witness with another boy pursued the man, & after a very long chase, came up with him and took him, and gave him up to Sergt. Fuller of the police; witness was about sixty yards from the man when he first observed the gun, but was only about ten yards distant when the man turned round and presented a pistol at him and snapped it: would not know the man again, as it was dark; Mr. West came up after the man was taken, and while he was lying on the ground. Edward West deposed, that he lives at Villerstown, and the night when the gun was taken out of Fox's house, he heard an alarm raised, in consequence of which he armed himself, and a few workmen whom he could depend upon; they went in pursuit of the robber; came up to the man, who was lying on the ground, and Fox's son and other two boys were standing beside him; the man lay as if he were in a faint, but being himself a professional man, he felt his pulse, and found it quite regular, at least as much so as any one's would be after being a little excited by exertion; in consequence he desired those who were present to drag the man a little, and having got him up he very suddenly recovered, when witness desired that the man should be brought on, as the country was in such a disturbed state, that he feared a rescue; they brought the prisoner to Killucan and gave him up to Sergeant Fuller of the police; saw the man searched, when several balls were found on his person; the pistol was loaded, witness saw the charge drawn out of it. For the Defence. Peter Magrath deposed, that when the prisoner takes any liquor, he is worse than any man he knows.- The prisoner was found Guilty. ... ------------------------- | SdeM | |

LC | 1823 | 7 | 05 | NPS | MAHER | John | This day, Mr. BLACKER held a session under the Insurrection Act in the City Court, when John MAHER was put on his trial, charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having been found skulking on the high road near the Artilery Barrack, at an unseasonable hour on the 27th of June last. This wwas the person who robbed the Nunnery Chapel some time since of a silver cup, but for want of prosecution on that charge, was liberated. He stated in his defence to account for his being found out, that he had been denounced by the Clergy; that no person would permit him into a dwelling-house; and that, in consequence, he was obliged to sleep in a lime-kiln convenient to where he was taken. Mr. BLACKBOURNE said his case did not come within the meaning of the Act, not having a known place of residence, and he was ordered to be discharged. LC | 1824 | 7 | 24 | NPS | MARRETT | C | Sir | At the Court of Petty Sessions, this day present, the Mayor, Sir C. MARRETT, and William ROCHE, Esq. The only case that appeared for investigation was that of a man named John MEAGHER, who was found at an unseasonable hour, last night, in the Convent of St. Clare. This unfortunate creature was examined by the bench, and voluntarily made the followning statement: That he was a blacksmith by trade; admitted scaling the Nunnery wall, and that his sole object in getting into the premises was the hope of being transported; that he was excommunicated about 15 months ago (for stealing a silver chalice out of the Convent Chapel,) since which period he has been refused employment everywhere he applied; is reduced to the most extreme distress; has not been suffered to enter any house; lives by begging a few potatoes and is obliged to roast them in a lime-kiln; no one, not even his brother, would know him or hold community with him; is almost in a state of nakedness and actually starving from want and misery; transportation would be a relief for him. This singular and lamentable detail made a considerable impression on the Court: the unfortunate wretch was truly an object of pity. The porter of the Nunnery, William O'MEALY, then swore informations against him, and he was committed to stand trial at the ensuing assizes. The Mayor observed, that if the prosecution failed, he might be indicted as a vagrant, and thus his wished would be accomplished. | NickR |
