Nick Reddan's Newspaper Extracts
(now including Simon de Montfort's extracts (work in progress))
— part 07

The data in my extracts includes entries that interest me from various Irish newspapers from 1720 to 1865 sorted by family name. Simon's extracts references from Longford / Leitrim / Westmeath / Roscommon and were previously on his site LONGFORD ANCESTRY in a different format. They add some bredth and richness to my own efforts.

List of newspapers and where they might be found

Main families covered by my extracts include CROKER, COOTE, DREW, SWAN and others with some relationship with them.

LC1824908NPSBINDON LtOn Saturday night, between the hours of 11 and 12, six cocks of hay were maliciously set fire to on the lands of Lackareagh, County Clare, he property of Robert M'CUTCHIN, tenant to Thomas ARTHUR, Esq, and though every exertion was made by Lieutenant BINDON, with the Police from O'Brien's-Bridge, nothing could prevent them from being consumed, notwithstanding the incessant rain; and after searching the ground, seven sheep were discovered dead in out-house, apparently killed with sticks and stones, and two of them found hanging across a beam, with their heads much bruised. The houses were then all diligently searched, and in the house of his uncle, John DEVITT was apprehended and lodged in the bridewell of O’Brien's-Bridge, for being found with his cothes wet and not being an inmate; and whose father (now herdsman to the ground) was the former tenant and ejected by Mr. ARTHUR, last April. Longford Msgr1837217NPSBLACKALL MrSPORTING On Wednesday there was a large muster of sportsmen at Colamber, where the Longford hounds met by appointment, but previous to their throwing off, three steeple-chase matches were to be decided. The course was laid out over the beautiful grass farm of P. O'Reilly, Esq., who had in the kindest manner given leave for that purpose. The whole course could be distinctly seen from the winning-post, and the day being very fine, and a number of equipages on the course, gave a brilliancy and gaiety to the scene which we have seldom seen equalled in the county of Longford. Soon after one o'clock the first match came off between Mr. Montfort's ch. m., ridden by the owner, and Mr. Blackall's blk. h. Cleek, ridden by Captain Campbell, which was won easily by the latter ...SdeM
LC1824114NPSBLACKBOURNEFrancisMr (Judge)John O'BRIEN, a blacksmith, was tried, and after a long and patient investigation, found guilty of being absent from his place of abode, at Ballybrown, in this County, on the night of the 20th December last. Mr. BLACKBOURNE passed sentence of transportation for seven years on the prisoner -- whose demeanour at the conclusion, was marked by the most daring hardihood, and betrayed a perfect indifference as to his fate.NickR
LC1823705NPSBLACKBOURNE MrThis day, Mr. BLACKER held a session under the Insurrection Act in the City Court, when John MAHER was put on his trial, charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having been found skulking on the high road near the Artilery Barrack, at an unseasonable hour on the 27th of June last. This was the person who robbed the Nunnery Chapel some time since of a silver cup, but for want of prosecution on that charge, was liberated. He stated in his defence to account for his being found out, that he had been denounced by the Clergy; that no person would permit him into a dwelling-house; and that, in consequence, he was obliged to sleep in a lime-kiln convenient to where he was taken. Mr. BLACKBOURNE said his case did not come within the meaning of the Act, not having a known place of residence, and he was ordered to be discharged. The Court then adjourned and the Learned Counsel set out for Dublin.NickR
LC1827414NPSBLACKBOURNE Mr SergeantThe four HOGANs found guilty on Friday, at the Clonmel Assizes, of the manslaughter of Charles MCCARTHY at the fair of Kilfeacle, last July, were conveyed next day to the hulks at Cove, for transportation for life. This Mr. Sergeant BLACKBURNE pledged himself to effect, after their sentence was passed. They were of a very respectable class of farmers, but unfortunately for themselves and their families they were leaders of a faction, which has been in existance these sixty years. Their sudden departure, amidst the lamentations of their numerous relatives and friends, was truly deplorable.NickR
